Design & Technology

At St Christopher’s Primary School, our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum is creative, practical, and knowledge-rich. We aim to inspire pupils to recognise the integral role design plays in everyday life, empowering them to become imaginative, innovative problem-solvers both individually and as part of a team.

Key Features of Our Design Technology Curriculum:

Our DT curriculum is structured into three distinct, hands-on areas (Cook, Sew, and Build), delivered in dedicated five-hour units to ensure focused, deep learning across every year group:

  • Cook: Pupils build practical culinary skills using step-by-step recipes, culminating in Year 6 with the creation of a multi-dish mezze meal. Beside practical cooking, children learn foundational concepts including nutrition, seasonality, food transportation, production, and global food cultures.
  • Sew: Children master fabric and thread techniques including embroidery, appliqué, weaving, and plaiting. As technical skills progress, pupils explore contemporary real-world concepts such as fabric properties, fast fashion, industrialisation, recycling, and environmental impact.
  • Build: Focusing on structures, mechanical systems, and electrical systems (in Key Stage 2), pupils construct functional products like moving cards, vehicles, and toys. Learning is linked directly with scientific principles—such as forces, motion, and material properties—and culminates in Year 6 with user-centered design, such as creating an interactive water wall for Reception pupils.

Through this practical, progressive framework, we equip children with essential life skills, creative confidence, and technical knowledge—inspiring the next generation of chefs, engineers, carpenters, designers, and architects as they prepare for secondary education and beyond.
