Maths

At St Christopher’s, we are currently transitioning to teach mathematics using Can Do Maths. This approach is built on the belief that all children can be successful mathematicians. Children are taught the knowledge, skills and mathematical thinking they need through carefully structured lessons, with learning broken down into small, manageable steps.

The Can Do Maths approach takes children step by step through their mathematical learning, building new knowledge upon what they already know. Teachers use clear modelling, mathematical representations and carefully chosen questions to develop children’s understanding. Children learn to make connections between mathematical ideas and are encouraged to explain their thinking, reason mathematically and apply their knowledge to solve problems.

Alongside daily maths lessons, children take part in ‘Maths on Track’ meetings. These provide daily opportunities to revisit and practise important knowledge and skills so that previous learning is remembered and used confidently. Key mathematical knowledge is deliberately revisited over time, helping children to become increasingly fluent and independent mathematicians.

Children are taught to see mathematics as something that makes sense, rather than a collection of rules to remember. Our aim is for children to leave St Christopher’s with secure mathematical knowledge, confidence in their own ability and the skills to approach unfamiliar problems with resilience and curiosity.
